Its almost a line from a sitcom. We might even associate it with the banter a couple might use when quarrelling. “What have you done for me lately? For the past 4 years a single tiny word has changed without notice to “What have you done TO me lately”.
It happened so quickly that we missed it and yet the tiny change in a tiny word in a tiny world has moved the course of our state of mind. Rather than an off-hand phrase in the American lexicon, it has become the question we each wake up to each morning. We flip through the paper, we switch on the news, and the thing that motivates us to engage with the world while the Keurig is warming up is: “What have you done TO me lately. We glance at the newsfeed and we know with certainty that someone has indeed done something to us, and that something is not good. Every morning for 4 years.
In my mind I see a three dimensional pool table the word “to” is like the 14 ball in the corner pocket and the cue ball “FOR” is in perfect alignment. We put a little english on the ball and the crack is heard, the thunk of it dropping in the pocket. Now the word reads once again “What have you done FOR me lately”.
There is a world where we can make this shot. Whether pro or novice, it is an easy shot. Click…..thump. Game over. Make the phrase part of the lexicon again and wait until the Keurig is done. Turn on the news and smile to find out that by sinking one easy shot, we have changed the world with the 14 ball in the corner pocket.
